I found a 92 cherokee that blew a rod it has the 4.0 in it for 300 i am thinking about getting it because i found a 99 4.0 for 100 bucks but i was wondering if the 99 motor will match up to the 92 drive train Thanks for the help hopefully this turns into a fun mud and trail toy

 

It should work fine, they never really changed anything about the xj's other than minor exterior and interior changes

 

Thats one idea i just had a friend offer me his 93 grand cherokee but it has a bad trans for 500 it has a 3 inch lift but is full time 4 wheel drive what is better for off road fun. There both beat up so i'm not worried about that i'm talking like which one has better capabilities off road

They both do great offroad, I like part time alittle better just so I can put it in 2wd and slide around alittle easier in the mud and snow.

92 is the non "high output" motor and the 99 is "high output"
Motor wise there pretty much the same exept the crank sensors and some other random stuff but it'll work as long as you dont get a motor from the late 80's XJ's.

 

thanks has anyone heard of a one year only trans for a 93 grand cherokee the guy at the shop said that it had like a 42re and it was junk. so i found a trans from a 97 4.0 for 100 bucks will it work?

 

They started the high output in 91 the only difference is in 99 they changed the intake manifold

the AW4 tranny was used in the grand cherokee in early 93 and changed to a 42re mid year so the AW4 is probably what he is talking about, jeep ran that tranny for a long time in the cherokees and comanches but only for half a year in the grand cherokees

Physically, everything will bolt up and work just fine. Computer and engine management related, you may need to swap out some of the newer components for the original ones that work with the vehicle PCM unless you are willing to convert to the later model wiring and computer.

The XJ is a fun and capable off-road machine. Both of my kiddos built XJs that did very well.






One thing to watch for is the unit body. It can develop cracks from twisting after a while. Lots of ways guys handle that, from plating the frame rails to building cages, but they are okay until you start going big on tires and axles.
