Information In need of Diesel Tech's!

Ok, A Know-it-all friend of mine apperrently thinks to become a diesel tech you have to work on an oil rig for a certain period of time before you can come back and work as a diesel tech in shops or what not. Now I think its a great big load of .B.S but i want to know from a real diesel tech for argumentitive reasons. i think a good Lesson by a diesel tech would be good for this friend of mine.

It helps working around diesel engines, can get a little hands on and a little feel to them. But it's not going to get you a diesel tech certification. That's what school is for.

Being a roughneck, tool pusher, driller, etc has about as much to do with being a diesel mechanic as....well...as much as being a mechanic has to do with being a tool pusher, driller, or roughneck.

You work with your hands....you getting really friggin' dirty....and if you're a mechanic for a drillin' outfit you might get yelled at a lot, but the rig boss usually knows that if you yell at the mechanic, things take longer, so they usually just yell at whoever broke what the mechanic is fixing and leave the wrenches alone.

That's about all I gots for your friend......

i may not have been too clear, but he said that AFTER you get out of school *wyotech, itt tech, ect* you MUST work on an oil rig for a certain period of time Before you can work in any shops or whatnot.

but keep the comments coming...he should be over sometime this week and im gonna show him this thread to prove him wrong.

What?? No, of you graduate from Wyotech, shops will hire you. BUT, there are probably a few that would like you to have a little more hands on.

Just like trucking school, most companies hire graduates, but other won't till you log a few miles.

Yea after school you can work in a shop. Unless like wildbill said they want someone with a little more hands on experience. I graduated school and i am now working for a shop.

I worked at shops for 8 years then i came out here and now im working for the oil co.
so no plus the oil co would want you to have experience before the let you touch the big engines maybe they will let you change the oil
