a buddy of mine wants to add a very small amount of acetlyn to the intake side of his cummins to see if it boosts mpg. any thoughts.

 

What? Thats a real good way to have a runaway and blow up a motor or possibly worse.

I cant wait to see him on the next edition of The Darwin Awards.

This is a trick to get better MPG with a gas car and I have never heard about using it with a diesel.

 

he wants to add 1/4 psi in front of the turbo when the truck is runnin down the road. i have also heard of a few people tryin this with gassers. he thinks it should be like hydrogen. just glad hes usin his rig for this experiment.

Isn't acetylene unstable above 15 psi? Wouldn't the turbo compress it to what ever the boost pressure is and further compression from the piston in the combustion chamber cause pre-ignition or worse? I mean a small amount of acetylene in a balloon is crazy imagine if it was confined to a combustion chamber.

Your buddy should do some research on the stoichiometry of acetylene before he lights her off.... pun intended.

 

Thats pretty much what I said - this could cause a runaway, melted pistons or worse.

Even at 1/4 psi - I still dont think its a good idea.
