2 Buy or Not 2 Buy: 96 6.5 1 ton--many repairs done
Okay, my diesel was stolen (twice! in one year). Got my insurance check, and now I'm in the market for another cheap diesel ($3000 or so).
Found a 96 6.5 GMC 1 ton in that range. I really like the looks of this truck, but researched the engine and got scared. Even local diesel shops said to watch out. I'm not hauling heavy loads a lot and I'm don't need a powerhouse, so that's not my concern. I'm worried about the typical fuel system weaknesses.
So...called the guy who's selling it (I'm too far for a test drive) and found out the injection pump has been rebuilt, the PMD relocated, and the lift pump replaced--all just before putting it up for sale. He says it runs great, good condition, 203k miles, air works, clean, straight, shifts fine, etc, etc.
My question is with rebuilt, upgraded, or replaced parts, should I still be concerned about the common failure points on this truck, or can I rest at ease for 50K or so?

if its really clean and doesnt look like it was worked hard then i would get it because it shows it has been taken care of and usually points to a truck that hasnt been abused. if its beat up and dirty i would run. even though parts have been replaced the engine might not go 250K. 200K is the beginning of the period where your going to see signs of what type of history the truck had 200k.
if a 6.5 is driven as a daily driver with little towing and not abused it could easily hit 300k but if its been abused it might not hit 250K. just go check it out first
