Howdy folks. I'm about to start towing a family camper as well as a boat every other weekend. My Diesel was bought used a few months ago and I have since put a 4.5 inch Fabtech Lift on it with 35 Inch Tires. I love my truck and can not wait to start towing a little with it.

My questions, is how much of a drop does the ball need? I've been to a few retailers, but the longest drop they have does not seem like it comes close to being low enough to the ground. Can you fine folks point me in the right direction? I guess the better question is, how far off the ground does the top of the ball need to be?

Let me know if my question does not make any sense as I may not know the lingo, but I think it comes across. Thanks all.

18" above ground is a good #

 

Depending on your trailer rear end height 18 imches is on the end but 12-18 is a good rule of thumb. You probably lookin at a special build hitch. Commercial manufacturers don't like to go that long for liability reasons.

I use a 6 inch drop with just 33" tires and no lift and it's still a little high for some trailers. So your lookin at a 12" or more drop.

 

The best thing to do is to do a measurment.......back yer truck up to whatever you will be towing................the trailer needs to be level at the frame ...not up and not down but level. then measure the distance from the ground to the top of the hitch and add 2" to it...........then transfer that measurment over to the truck so you can see how much of a drop hitch you need

 

You can get 8, 10 and 12" drops...

Theres also adjustable drop mounts - Reese (among others) makes them.

 

Thanks for the replys everyone. I found the hitch below, but it is awfully expensive. I'd probably get the 10inch drop, just to be safe. Does anyone own one of these or can anyone else recommend a different manufacturer? Thanks again.

B&W drop hitch is the strongest one out there and runs about the same price as the rapid hitch.

Really check your trailers close before you buy a 10". Like I said, I use a 6" and the back bumper of my 22' stock trailer tends to drag the road once in a while. I use it like that because it lowers the step up for critters to get in and it's solid steel so it's not gonna hurt it to drag now and then. I'd hate to see you do that to the back of a boat though and your at least 7" taller on your truck then I am.
