Been mixed reviews on the overdrive unit's through the years. Some people have had good luck with them but most that do any pulling have had problems. They tend to overheat when pulling for any distance.

i like mine on my 97. i run a temp guage and if it were to get too warm i can shift out of od and it cool down. i use 4th over for the heavier loads but on the steeper longer hills, even if i have the power to pull in od, i shift to direct to make it easier on the unit just as i wont pull heavy uphill in 5th eiher.

the earlier units ran atf and yep,,,,had high temps. they now tell ya to use the same stuff as the nv4500 takes. i use the new amsoil stuff. runs a lot cooler than my dana 80. i do wish the gv had a bigger oil capacity

love the ability to split gears, esp 3rd while towing. since i hv 4.10s,,,,nice for frwy cruise at decent speeds

I have one on my 90, bought it that way. Love it.

I have a customer with a US Gear overdrive mounted in an F550 he uses to tow a back hoe. Even with a Cummins pushing 450hp/900ft lbs at the tires, he has no issues. It uses regular gear lube, and you just have to change it out every now and again.

would that F550 happen to be the white one with the 24v and NV5600 that was in diesel power magazine, if it is that is an absolutely awsome truck

Yes. That would be the truck. He uses it to tow the Back hoe in the magazine and also an excavator of similar size. The splitting ability of the unit is awesome. Really has no trouble pulling some heavy loads around like they aren't even there.

Right now, convert from dually to single wheel. Got a guy wanting to trade axles straight across. I am looking for a single wheel bed, then some body work for the cab and some paint. Then, the 5" stacks from the 2006 will go on the 90 and some company decals and some nice aluminum wheels and thats it.

Not even a turbo upgrade? You know you want it to be a little faster.
