Question Is it just me, or is this "retarded"?

Hey guys,

this is something that has puzzled me for years...

I don't understand why it's not legal for semi-trucks to use engine retarders in urban areas, but at the same time, there are no legal restrictions (that I have seen anyways, unless I'm wrong/blind) on driving a Harley at late hours down residential streets, even if you're just going home....Now correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it sound incredibly stupid to restrict truck drivers from using their retarder brakes on a highway route passing through a city, when some idiot can ride his loud-*** harley as much as he pleases anywhere in an urban area? From what I've seen, a Harley is far louder than any semi I've ever heard with full engine brakes on, and my uncle's got 4 Petes....Driving behind a Harley at 60mph is numbing.

What gives???

States do have laws against running straight pipes.

heres a prime example of how loud these trucks can be.......

heres a 2001 tractor with a n14 cummins... alot of trucks on the road have these motors, listen to how loud his jake is... you think the people who live in that house at 2:35 want to hear that racket all day?

don't get me wrong I like loud trucks but theres loud and mean sounding and then theres loud to be obnoctious. I do like the sound of a loud jake but some of these trucks out on the road do it just to do it

Sweet thanks for posting that!
I do love that sound too!

I do also like Choppers, not a Harely fan though, but it seems weird not to have restrictions on them when these guys that drive for a living have to be considerate of everyone else.

I think it has more to do with the fact that trucks run 24-7... you dont see as many harleys on the road at 2am as you do road tractors.

I'll tell you what I hate is drivers that are to dumb to turn off the jake when speeding up... sounds like crap when it kicks in everytime you shift...

I think they do that so they can up-shift faster.. or just look cool.
But you're right...typically there aren't many hogs out at 2am.

LOL most bars close @ 2AM thats when I see alot of loud motorcylces. If people dont like the sound of a jake brakes they shouldnt live right beside the Interstate! On 2 lane roads through towns the speed limit is normally low enough that trucks dont have to use jake brakes. This past weekend we had a Harley rally, hundreds of bikes, on the poker runs they go thru residential neighborhoods, 20 to 50 at a time they rattled windows three blocks away. most drivers dont use the jakes in town, its the few bad apples that have turned the public and the laws against truckers.

Yeah I can't stand when you hear some guy just came out of the bar and Cracks up his bike. OR A loud V8 But I will take any of those over a 4 banger with a fart can at 2 AM.

But don't think Bike Riders don't get busted to my brother has gotten plenty of noise complaints and a few tickets.
