Default Broke Down in Indiana

Lost 5th gear on NV4500, spent half a day removing transmission dont think i will be breaking it apart to weld nut on shaft will leave that up to dtr transmission shop in Chandler Indiana. I have not decided if welding is best fix? I will Definitely replace clutch with South Bend Clutch. If anyone has any ideas about a fix or hints on putting transmission back into my truck, I would very much appreciate it!

Welding the nut on is just a temp fix. A previous owner welded mine and the shaft broke.
Parts scattered. Look up the post NV4500 goes boom in the Cummins corner.

I would not weld it bad idea.

You can retighten the nut under the truck without dissasmenling the tranny or taking it out. Just remove the transfer case and take off the aluminum tailhousing the fifth gear and nut are right there.

Last time I did that I used the upgraded nut bought it at a dodge dealer. It never gave me any trouble after that.

Also when you get it together don't drive in 5th gear with the engine RPM under 1500. Lugging in 5th is one of the main factors in that nut backing off.

Exactly the reason - you have been driving it wrong. Dont be afraid to rev these things - you wont hurt it by reving it.

Welding the nut might get you by for a good long while if you are a good welder and can get good penetration. As far as I know, the best fix is a fully splined main shaft. The "upgraded" nut "fix" is a joke.
