I want to put a small diesel into a gen 1 or gen 2 Toyota MR2. I would use either a toyota or VW turbo diesel. What do you think? Is it doable?

Being mid engine and cramped, it be a hell of a challenge I'm assuming.... BTW

 

Just about anything can be done.

But, you have to ask yourself a few questions when looking at any engine swap - how much is this REALLY going to cost me? How many headaches am I going to have? How long is it going to take? Will it be worth my time, money and sweat? I think you could pick a better vehicle than an MR2. Why not a VW engine in a Samauri or Tracker, or Jeep?

 

never heard of a vw in a jeep. All of them are shaped like a brick. I'm just looking to do something different from the norm. I probably won't even do it. It sounds like it will cost too much, and be too difficult. I really would love to see a database of cars made in the states that were also diesel overseas. That would be helpful. I'm sure there are some pretty cool cars that aren't here because of the gov.

If I had a Toyota MR2 with a blown engine, and a small Diesel engine that didn't fit in anything else, and they were just sitting there, and I had a massive quantity of free time and the few thousand dollars that it would cost to make it work...

I still wouldn't do it. I wouldn't consider the end result as worth the effort. I'd rather have an MR2 with an R22 in it.

 

Mr-2's shared parts with many other front drive toys. Camry's Corolla's and the JDM equivalents. Many were available with diesel engines. Swapping a complete engine and trans from one of those cars would be possible (in theory!) but it would not be a swap that many others could help with. IF you were really determined to do it though, purchasing a front cut from one of those cars would get you as close to everything bolt in as possible. Don't let people without imagination and skill prevent you from doing something different. But it is not going to be cost effective.

 

I would go with a VW diesel. They are very cheap easy to find A couple of people have done this swap into mid Engine Cars. You can actually get some power out of them. Toyota not so much and they aren't that reliable atleast not the diesel in my opinion. Another one yo could look for is a Audi Diesel they are similar to the VW but ti's a Twin OHC thy are both very good engines and with the porper tuning and extras say Propane 50 MPG would not be a problem.

 

I probably would use the VW TDI as well as they are available in the States. Making parts availble for a long time to come. My 03 TDI Wagon gets near 50 all stock.(used to get 52mpg before 07!) No mods No Propane. The Mr 2 With less weight and better aerodynamics should approach 60!

 

With Propane or CG he should be able to get up to 80 MPG
