Default Truck Trailer Receptical

with the key turned in my 96 dodge should there be any power to the plug at the rear of the truck. its the factory 7 wire socket. with the key on i have a hot prong. any ideas? there was a rats nest of wiring due to a home made goose neck. i cut everything out and just matched the colors up. i then hooked a electric brke controler in the cab with a plug and play harness. but i dont get any trailer brakes. i hooked everything up correctly. it seems like the trailer brakes are draging. thats why i wanted to know about the hot prong.

The wiring plug is always hot on your truck. For the brakes there is two different ways that are common to wire the trailers and if your trailer brakes are locked up right now you will either need to change the truck wiring to match the trailer or change the trailer wire to match the truck.

What plug type are you working with here. 6 round, 6 flat, 7 round or 7 flat. Never mind I just read the post again.

It should be a blue wire that goes is placed on the number 2 slot if you can still read the numbers. If you can't it is the terminal just to the right of the notch if you place the notch on top.

This is the correct/standard way to wire the brakes. Some guys put them to the center pin for some reason. Don't know why but I've seen it many times.
