Default 1997 k 1500 WOT/run away for about 30 seconds on the highway,

So I was driving home the other day, truck had been running a little funny but not horrible, it had a code for the pmd resistor and egr with I am fixing to delete, all the sudden it just took up, I hit the key and it still went for about 15 to 20 seconds, then made a popping sound and shut down, I was in the middle of a highway under construction with no shoulder, so I tried to turn it back over and it literally limped home, barely running it was rough, but luckily it did make it home pulled in killed and it won’t start since, I am getting fuel, I’m going to run a compression test today to see if it destroyed any internals, truck has 190k on it, please any input would help this is my first diesel.

I went thru this . It was a bad PMD that caused my 6.5 to do this. It would run away without notice, and the only way to stop the runaway was to shut the key off. This happened with a couple PMD's over the years. Switch that PMD out.
