I just purchased a 2005 3500 crew cab cummins. Has a 5" exhaust, cold air intake, auto trans [rebuilt], and egr delete. There was a programmer on this truck. I bought from dealer, I don't know what previous owner had on it. Question is this: do I have to pay a Dodge dealer to return the ECM to stock before I put another programmer on it? I would like to program for MPG and to select gears in the trans. I think the trans has a shift kit in it so it shifts too soon into overdrive for me. I'm not interested in huge power yet. Currently the truck rolls coal when more than 1/3 throttle and I'd like to not waste fuel. And yeah I am on a budget.

 

just go and buy a smarty jr programmer and try to install it.
if it don't install then take it to the dealer to get the ecm flashed
i am pretty sure the smarty will help and fix your problem

EGR can't be deleted on an 05 unless you replace hard parts, not sure what that means if it was told to you.

You will have to have it flashed at a dealer if you want to make sure it has the stock program on it, most programmers will not load over another's programming.

Might not have a programmer either, just because ti smokes that doesn't mean it has a programmer. You need to get a scanner on it or gauges to see what is going on before doing much. Some 05's have plastic tank CACs that will open under boost and cause smoke, low LP pressure will do it also as will a faulty FCA.

You cannot program gears on a 48RE, all you can do is influence the gov pressure rise and TTVA movement, that takes a programmer like Smarty UDC Pro or HP Tuners to accomplish.
