Default Timing issue

So I'm timing my truck its a 1994 12v 130k miles, just basic mods. When I put in the 4k gsk kit, I lost a lot of power along with white smoke. So I figured it was time to check/advance my timing. So I'm at the point where I have TDC marked on the balancer, with the dial indicator in the #1 DV barrel. I have the gauge at 5(little gauge) and 0(large gauge) I crank the motor halfway around the balancer, then the plunger starts to drop. I measured .475 in inches,(I watched the gauge travel around almost 5 complete times) then I used a different dial indicator in mm and its saying 11.69. This is implying my truck has slipped to around 40degree advanced. Either I'm doing this wrong or that's a lot of slippage.
