a rebuild kit from firepunks $700 an new tranny $3700.the savings are obvious but how well is a rebuild kit for towing an longevity?

 

A good rebuild is the way to go. What is your goal(s)? Heavy towing, race, sled pull, severe off-road? With a good rebuild you can usually have it built "to your order" with billet parts and aftermarket parts etc., or you can buy a new trans. check out the vendors on this site.

 

my goal is keeping my truck happy towing our 15k lb fifth wheel up an down mountians an such.i had a 01 with a garmon tranny,i loved it just wish i kept the truck an put different gears in it.i learned then loving a diesel was gonna be an expensive an never ending venture

 

First look around your area for a shop that specializes in the 48RE! If your competent at rebuilding the tranny it's not that hard a few critical parts need to go in and they will last a long time!
