Default bombed turbo

Hello All -

I've been on here a while as I own an LMM Dmax, but my Bro-in-Law has a '12 Cummins with a problem, and asked me to see what I could find out.

He's currently throwing codes p226c and p2262. The truck will start and choke itself with the vanes shut; the turbo brake on/off switch is possessed too. He's been able to shut down and restart a few times and can sometimes get the vanes to sweep and she'll run. We tried to take her out and heat her up and get the vanes cycling with the turbo brake and some WOT small tune runs. It didn't seem to help the following startup at all.

Rewinding for a sec - he did ALL of the deletes to this truck within about a month of getting it new. I think he had around 800mi on her. She's now at only 24,000mi.

He's figuring the stealership won't want to clean/replace the turbo once they see his deletes. He's making an appointment and going to try to talk to the service manager first and see how cooperative he might be .

My suggestion was that to avoid the whole issue from happening ever again... it's turbo upgrade time baby!!!

What would be the most budget friendly replacement turbo for this STOCK rig, that retains as much stock driveability and feel as possible? By stock I mean stock engine/trans and currently an H&S tuner (I have an EFI Live V2, and could convince him to come to the dark-side if the H&S can't do what we need with a replacement fixed vane turbo). I have done some reading and I see that the manifold can be swapped from an older generation to give a cheap t4 platform, and that opens up the world IMHO Or, is there a drop-in that is not prone to sooting up the exhaust side and cementing the vanes?

Lastly, as the oddball here... I was wondering about just installing a water-meth kit for him on a (clean) stock turbo. Wouldn't that keep things squeaky clean for the stock turbo? It would be the cheapest option by far.

Thanks in advance!!

Wally

Well, this has just been a fountain of information. I'll be installing a new fixed vane turbo tomorrow.

I've seen this in the past. What tuner are you running for the emission deletes? I take it from reading this post you have already ordered another turbocharger?

What turbo though. Any s300 is going to be too small for a 6.7. The smallest I'd recommend would be an s464. Spoolup is around the same as stock, but with much better cooling ability, and top end performance
