Default Possible HPOP oil leak

This is a 1998 E350 7.3 powerstroke 268k. Have owned the van three years, it has never used or leaked any oil-ever. It has always been dependable but has always seemed to be lean on fuel. Light throttle pressure results in it running like a carbureted gas engine does when it is running out of fuel. Has always done this since I got it.
This weekend it coated the engine with oil from the thermostat housing up over the top of the engine, underside of all the hoses and the air intake tube and filled the valley with oil as well as coating the transmission top to bottom and the left exhaust manifold.
Cleaned it up as much as possible, filled the reservoir with oil, and the oil pan. Started right up and now I can't find a drip anywhere.
It is hard to see in the engine on a van but figured as much oil as was there it shouldn't be this hard. Drained the valley as much as possible, has a little left in it. Is the best idea to just pull the HPOP or could it be the source of it acting lean and need replaced?
Seemed to be straight forward at first but now it's a little puzzling. Any and all insights welcomed.
Thanks, Wayfaringmechanic

Sounds like you need to put a seal kit in the hpop.

I would get the kit through international. Its cheaper and has a longer threaded check plug to go back in. Somtimes those tend to strip out and the longer one will grab more threads and hold better
