Default Intermittent Smoke

My 2008 F350 smokes intermittently. There does not appear to be a repeatable pattern. The smoke is mostly white to gray. It is a huge billowing cloud when it happens. If I shut off the engine and restart the problem stops. I've had it to the local diesel service shop, they are stumped. Any Ideas?

No. regen does not smoke in this truck. We did look at the possibility but it is not related. The dpf is nearing the end of it's service life, but again, not related (or so says the mechanic).

No codes. The thing is it has to be electronic. Would anything else explain the reset on shut down and start up?

How often is it happening? What are you reading codes with? Anything else that might have brought this on? Does it chance color if you get on the throttle a bit? Check your oil level and make sure it's not too high too (ie, fuel getting in there...)

It will happen 3 or 4 times in one day and then not again for a couple of weeks. It happens when I'm diving down the highway and when I'm running errands around town (errands in a 1-ton turbo diesel dually...yeah, I love my truck).

I've only had the truck for 6 months. So I don't know what else might have brought it on.

Oil level is fine. The problem existed prior to the first oil change right after I bought it and it continued through the last 15k miles.

I haven't tested the throttle yet. It smokes so much,k great billowing clouds, that I'm hesitant to get on it for fear the it'll cause an accident.

The diesel tech used his device to check for both hard and soft codes.

Per the "Power Stroke Owner's Guide".

"If air is allowed to enter the fuel system, (during fuel filter change or if you run out of fuel) the engine will purge the trapped air as it runs. The engine may run rough and produce white smoke while air is in the system. This is normal and should correct itself in a short time."

How might air be getting into the fuel system without either running out of fuel or a recent fuel filter change?

Let's go back the the fuel in the oil scenario. What are the potential causes and what are the common results of fuel in the oil?
