Default transfer case problems

2004 2500 common rail goes great down the road until i engage the 4x4. still turns front tires fine but has a sever clunking coming from the t-case. salvage yard wants 1100 for a used one. wondering if maybe its the output shaft bearing for the front yoke?

First off the tires are the same size and with in 1/2" of tread difference between the front and rear.

damn 1100 for a used one?! A refurb with a 3 year warranty is less than 900.
