I got an 01 just turned 195 thousand. Currently run rotella t 15 40. Would switching to amsoil benefit me any as far as engine longevity is concerned?

 

Nope, to many factors determine engine life. Oil being only one. Rottela makes good oil, stick with that. Many duramax trucks have gone over 500K miles on Dino oil

 

It's a loaded question. As stated, many factors come into play. When looking at strickly the oil, you still have many factors...length of intervals, weight used, dino vs syn, etc.
Can synthetics extend engine life? I believe so but what is that life? You've just seen an example of a dino offering pretty good life. That could be an eternity for one person and a few years for another.
Will it hurt to use it..no. Is it worth it to you? Depends on how you want to use it. Since you would be paying more for a premium product, you want to be sure your truck is ready for it. Does it leak or currently use oil? If so, it probably not going to get any better and may get worse. I had a 94 cummins with 265k on it that actually did improve in usage but it took 15k before it started to.
Anyway, just my 2 cents

 

it doesnt burn or leak a drop of oil, everything mechanical is absolutely fine -knock on wood- and im happy with rotella i change it about every 4 to 5 thousand but more so towards 4, im pretty on top of it.. i asked because amsoil is always so hyped up and i ask the people who talk about it whats so special about it and they dont have an answer worth a damn. so i figured id go to the guys that know.

 

check your owners manual, doesn't say 4-5 k miles, unless you tow or drive in harsh conditions a lot.

in order to benefit from amsoil (Cost wise) you would have to perform the extended drain intervals. With the duramax you can go upto 10k miles between oil changes with regular dino oil.

synthetics are not bad oils, actually better then regular dino. If you want to try out synthetic give rotella T6 a try

 

I tow several times a month, but im not hard on the truck at all, this is the first time I heard going up to 10k. This is my first diesel and played it safe I guess since ive grown up working on gassers using conventional oil

Probably a dumb question but might as well ask, if I give t6 a shot theres no going back to dino right? Or does it not make a difference

 

I wouldn't hesitate switching over to Amsoil. I have a 2005 Duramax and change my oil once per year. I also gained 2-3 MPG after switching over. They make a great product.

 

My dealer uses dello 400 in my truck, my question is what is Dino Oil, sorry but i'm learning.

Dino oil is just referring to your regular off the self petroleum based motor oil. Ie: not synthetic. It is referring to the fact that it is pumped from the ground of million(s) year old decomposing "dinosaurs" and not brewed in a lab. Synthetics generally still get there base ingredients from crude oil but are heavily modified so as to produce properties that are more desirable and hard to obtain in regular oil.

not typically an issue with more modern or well maintained vehicles. It has been shown to be more effective at cleaning deposits from the engine so with old, neglected engines it can cause a rapid increase in deposits and other crud being circulated in the engine as they are being cleaned off. Most of the time this just causes leaks as the particles where sealing it up before but in rear cases it has caused engine damage from circulating too much sludge.

the synthetics are compatible in any ratio with regular oil. Feel free to try any brand of motor oil, synthetic or not, and not worry about switching to another later.

 

Amsoil is a great oil if you have a newer truck and do extended drain intervals. If you change your oil that often the cost wouldnt be worth it and in older motors it can actually cause leaks. Also if you have been running any oil for a large amount of miles i believe its better to stick with it unless your experiencing problems. IMO
