The educated and informed reader may want to have informations behind those diagrams, explaining what stands behind those tests and how they are performed.

I liked it, because it was easy to read even with a limited chemistry background and revealed how test are performed and in which manner they are transferable to real life conditions.

Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants
Malcolm F Fox; Roy M Mortier; Stefan T Orszulik
Springer Netherland, 2008.
ISBN: 9781402086618 140208661X

"It is a nice, brief, inexpensive introduction to the subject, and perhaps excellent for its time (1997). However, there's almost nothing here that's not in a much better, more recent compilation (2005, CRC) on the same subject, edited by LR Rudnick. This later work by CRC, Taylor & Francis, is absolutely the best and most complete that has appeared on the subject of synthetic lubricants."

Seems these tests are hard to come by without money. Found this link. It doesn't show much, just a little more expanation.

Heath,
thank you for that link.
Due to the reason that I have access to that book in our military library I didn't know the cost of it.
It's crazy: They want 200 up to 430 € for it! Thats 290$ up to 600$

I found this link where you can look inside the book.
Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants - Google Bücher
Thank god, these are the pages of interest for us.
On top of the webpage you find content and you are able to flip through the complete book.
I hope they are useful for you and others as they were for me, to gain some background knowledge and enhance abilities to use the informations provided by manufactures in an educated and advertising independent way.

Michael

Even though recent fuel dilution issues forced AMSOIL
to adjust its Premium API CJ-4 Synthetic Diesel Oil drain
interval recommendations in 2007-2010 Dodge 6.7L, Ford
6.4L and GM 6.6L light-duty turbo-diesel pickups and
2007-2009 on-highway Caterpillar C13 and C15 engines
to the manufacturer-recommended drain intervals,
AMSOIL Premium Diesel Oils remain the premium choice
for diesel applications. AMSOIL Premium Diesel Oils
resist viscosity loss from both shearing forces and fuel
dilution to maintain their protective fi lm strengths, providing
superior protection to all diesel engines.
MMMM HMMMM now there coming around to reality....

The reality truly is that this is an issue regardless of brand name. Amsoil is more vocal about issues like these to make sure that current customers are well taken care of. But the extended intervals for all other applications where they apply, are still there. Them changing the recommendations for this application were to make sure they had ample time to do this type of testing to see how well the oil REALLY holds up under fuel dilution.

They are also testing right now in a wide range of DPF equipped light trucks throughout the US to see how the oil holds up in them as well.

The only test that shows how an oil is holding up in YOUR rig is a used oil analysis.

That is what they are doing. They have recruited Dealers from around the country to run the oil and follow specific guidelines on when to perform that analysis. They want more than just lab testing results, they want to get a real world picture of how they will hold up in different trucks in different regions under different operating conditions.
