Default wmo question

so today i was given 30 gallons of clean unused 10w gear oil in a 55 gallon drum, im wondering what ratio of rug to add if not 15% with this type of oil, i assume 15 % would be 4.5 gallons to get w85, just wondering if being thinner than say 15w40, would call for less rug.

in my LB7 duramax, i have found that about 5 gal of RUG to about 30 gals of 10w30/random used oil worked great. the only problem was hot starts. i believe that the hot engine was causing the RUG to turn to vapor in the lines and causing a vapor lock problem.

with this ratio the viscosity was right & ran just like big oil's diesel but with about three gals to 30 it would start ok and only smoke a little. this was the best ratio in my opinion.

now with clean unused oil this may change, also the gear oil weight will play part in this.

i would start with about 3 gals of RUG to the 30 gals of oil and fill the tank half way with this and the rest with diesel. when you get more comfortable with the mix and acquire more oil adjust the mix and find what works for you.

for the 12v cummins i believe they will eat more oil then the duramax can.

good luck
Jason

i got it from one of my customers who was taking it out of inventory because it was over 5 years old, but its been stored inside and looks like my truck would love it. i think im gonna add 3 gallons of gas and then top it off with diesel, and save it for my shtf contingency fuel, since its cherry fresh.

To get the viscosity and flashpoint of the fuel closer to that of #2 diesel based on the w85 ratio

Sorry, I was completely misunderstanding what you are trying to do. Sounds like you are treating the oil to use as fuel - not treating regular #2 diesel with the oil. That would make a couple tank's worth at best. Seems like a waste of good oil, to me.

I would just dump a gallon of the oil in every tank for the next 55 fillups and be hapy with the added lubricity boost that would provide to the ULSD - and last a long time. Well, at least as long as 55 tankfuls last you.

good point but to me being able to create 55 gallons worth of storeable, clean fuel for the price of a few gallons of gasoline and a few more of diesel is worth more to me than having a years worth of fuel additive.

other consideration was to just use the oil as oil, but i dont have anything that i would run a strait 10w drivetrain oil in, and they got rid of it because it was passed its supposed shelf life, I dont know if i believe that stored oil goes bad after that time but why take the chance?

Yet you are talking about continuing to store it. With gasoline mixed in.

That could get interesting after another couple years.
