Yep! $9.95 per UK Gallon of Diesel. There are 4.454 litres to one Gallon over here and Petrol (Gasoline) is a little less expensive but we are paying about 75% tax in that gallon figure and I think the American motorist's contribution is about 12%.
It's one of the reasons why UK & European vehicles are very prolific diesel-sippers with many Saloons or Estates (Station-wagons) typically yielding around 50mpg as standard.
I have a diesel 1992 Defender 90, 2.5TDi which, cruising at a steady 50mph on a relatively even motorway/highway, will return up to 40mpg but in 'normal' driving, about 27mpg.
I was looking at placing a post somewhere on this site (new at this!) seeking some information about any similar US model vehicles to the Land Rover Defender 90. At 2.5lt, it will tow 3.5t, permanent 4WD but all the American vehicles are between 2.7lt and a whopping 7.3lt units! Could you suggest anything reasonably similar, as I will be moving to upstate NY later this year. I cannot afford the US prices for a Defender!!

Not sure whats available right now that is similiar to the Rover. But Jeep , Cadilac, GMC / Chevy Porche and Mazda are all coming out with diesel options for some models soon. I know the Jetta with the 2.1? TDi gets about 40 to 50 mpg.

US gallons are about 3.8 liters, so keep that in mind when looking at fuel econ, it's not as bad as it might seem.

I don't think taxes that high would fly in the US, too many cars on the road and, especially out west, too much real estate and space to cover. I remember driving across Texas and seeing a sign "next exit 100 miles.
Jeep libbies have a few CRD (IIRC from 2005-2006) and Jeep Grand Cherokees around the same time had a 3.0 MB diesel V-6...but those can be tough to find. Rumor has it a diesel jeep is on the way for 2013...

I'm sure the US will indeed see fuel costs & taxes increase ... crude won't last forever and Government need income from somewhere in order to provide services. Anyway, thanks for the feedback - Liberties I knew about but Grand Cherokees I didn't.
I have looked at really vintage International Scouts & Austin Gypsy's but that's probably going back too far for me to get a reliable diesel work-horse!
Apart from going down the pickup route with a 3lt maximum engine (a search challenge in it's own right!), only the LR Discovery is close to my expectation of gaining a 90" wheelbase, 4WD, diesel vehicle capable of towing 3.5t (7,000lbs?). It's strange though ... here in the UK, the Defender is the (relatively) inexpensive utility truck, whereas the Discovery is the more expensive, upmarket vehicle. Seems like in the US, the reverse is true except there are no Discovery diesels!

They are pretty rare and not cheap. I would maybe wait for a 2013 if possible but the first year of new engines are always risky. I have looked at really vintage International Scouts & Austin Gypsy's but that's probably going back too far for me to get a reliable diesel work-horse!

Unfortunately 2008 and 2010 US emissions standards really put a dent in light duty diesel market.
VW has the touareg TDI...I think it can tow in the 7000-7500 pound range...3.0L V-6 diesel.
