This may be a silly question but thought I would ask because I;m sure I'm not the only one wondering. It seems like since they lowered the sulfur content in our fuel there have been alot of problems. I know if you go to Walmart you can buy a Lead substitute for engines that need leaded fuel. Do they make some kind of sulfur concentrate or another additive that contains sulfur or the same charicteristics?

 

Its not the sulfur that acts as a lubricant. Its the process of removing the sulfur that also strips away the lubricity of the fuel. As for our fuel going to crap, yeah, they are making it that way on purpose. Anyone else ever wonder why we (the US) have diesel with the lowest cetane rating? We are about 40-43, and I want to say Europe is like 50+. Burns much better.

Just add a quality fuel additive, preferrably one that increases cetane numbers and provides additional lubrication and you'll be happy. I think you know which one I use in both my trucks.

dont get me started on diesel fuel. there is no reason why diesel should be the same as regular gas. except to fill someones pocket

 

what about marvels mystery oil? is that ok to use?
i see it says on the container to use in fuel. but is it ok in diesel?

 

Hey Bow i heard MMO was more like a paint thinner than a lubricant. It may be ok in a gas engine I guess but from what I have heard it isnt so good for diesels ecspecialy the 24V's. I usually use PS in the silver jug or the white in the winter. I use an additive but I was just wondering if tere was somthing special i hadnt heard of to get my fuel back to where it needs to be. When i take off it is like a nasty gray haze instead of a healthy little black puff and it looks like the truck is sick. Even the wife noticed when the change was made to ULSD from LSD.

 

Theres no reason to put sulfur back in your tank.

Yeah, lots use MMO - but I wouldnt use it - mainly due to the fact that its mostly petroleum distillates, which is essentially the same as paint thinner.

Pete, if you want to get back the lube in your fuel look at adding a litre or two of TCW-3 2 stroke oil in every tank. It will add lube to keep your VP-44 happy and give you a nice milage bump.

 

thanks Dr Evil, I tried the 2 stroke on a trip home to MO from NC and didnt notice a difference. I use PS b/c it is easier to just strap it in the bed.

 

How much did you use?

Just because you didnt noice a difference does mean that it didnt make a difference.

Lucas Fuel additive with upper cylinder lubricant is what I use. I get a pretty good mileage increase from it too. Stay away from their oil additive for sure though...
