Using a good fuel additive such as Howes Lubricator, Stanadyne, or Power Service is much better for an engine than ATF. A lot of people (including me) also use TCW-3 2 stroke oil for added lubrication, as the 2 stroke leaves very little ash/crap after its burned.

Your buddy is right in the fact that ULSD has had most of the lubricating properties stripped out of it....but needs to do a little research before he adds ATF to his tank. This was an old mechanic/truckers trick from way back in the day. But, the formulation of ATF has changed and it now contains friction modifiers that will quickly wear the very close tolerances of the modern day an injector pump. Plus, ATF is not designed to be burned..
