Drilling has NOTHING to do with it. There is a number of forces driving the price of oil up but one of the biggest factors is the lack of refining capacity. Simply, new refinierys are not being built and the cost of fuel is skyrocketing because of it. The oil companies have been planning this for quite some time.

I would agree that we need to build new refineries, since we have not had one constructed since 1971 in this country. I still feel we need to get to drilling in our own country as each time OPEC says that the costs per barrel is going up so does the price of our fuel. This should reduce the cost of our fuel as well as the cost of what OPEC can and will charge us for crude oil.

What we can do is to drive in a more efficient manner. I am getting more than 20 MPG on my 2001 F350 CC DRW 4X4, near 50 on my daughter's Escape hybrid, more than 20 on my wife's Navigator (5.4). We can also decide to reduce our driving by combining trips into fewer trips. Talk to your employers to see if you can reduce your work week from 5 days to 4 days to reduce your driving by 20%. If your employer will allow telecommuting you find yourself able to reduce your daily commute even further.

Congress claims to want to do something to help out in this crisis and to help the environment. If congress would mandate that telecommuting be used when possible and offer tax breaks to companies that do allow it based on the number of employees that participate, we would see some real reduction in miles driven.

Diesel jumped from 4.49 to 4.69 from Friday to Saturday. I guess in honor of Memorial Day... I don't care what you say. That is the freaking oil companies sticking it to us yet again. You can telecommute, cut your work week, whatever... But as long as they keep setting profit records quarter after quarter, I'm convinced it is all BS. And it's basically a big catch 22. If the entire country cut their fuel consumption in half, these big companies would SCREAM poverty and jack up the prices. If you DOUBLED our consumption they would scream SHORTAGE and claim that they are being forced to over-extend their resources and jack the prices up again. Either way, we are screwed until we find a viable way to get the heck away from our reliance on these companies.

I don't know if it's good or bad, but the Cenex station has "market price" up on the board. $4.75-$4.84 at the others.
