Aaahhh,.the good old days of arching the starter. I remember doing this on one of our tractors. I also had a diesel Olds cutlass in high school. Use to impress the ladies when you could reach way down under the hood and make the car start. It took so little
It was a bad solenoid as you said, but I don't think we tested it, or I don't remember how we did it. Sorry.

The 3400 should be a diesel, and if so it has a mechanical shutoff in the injection pump. Just open the throttle slightly, put it in neutral, put the PTO out of gear, and jump your solenoid and it should start right up.

You can trace the trigger wire from the starter solenoid to the safety box behind the lower cowl. That safety box also has a clutch switch that must be triggered by depressing the clutch, a neutral switch from the transmission, and a PTO lockout switch. The safety box is wired to the start position on the key. The solenoid is what usually fails, but if it is stored in a wet or humid location the key switch itself can fail, as can any of the other switches.

It is most likely the neutral switch in the tranny, there are 2 wires in front of shifters, unplug both, then plug the 2 wires going to tranny together, should start if the switch is the problem
