It is 12v , - to ground. Alternator should charge 13.8 to 14.2 v back to battery.

If confused about wires, install a 1 wire delco alternator, sell a few of them every month to tractors with dead generators.

I just picked up a new alternator, same as the old one that was on it, basic Delco. But the alternator normaly uses two wires on this connector that fit's it and this tractor only has one going to it. The other spade is just sitting dead and that's what's got me confused, because it worked just fine like this for the first few years I had it.

If it is not a 1 wire setup, get a pictail for it, connect the red wire to the one there goes to the battery.

the red goes to hot post on alternator, the white from the pictail can be used for charging light, or just cut it off

It's cut off right now. I just couldn't figure out why there is two termnals coming off the alternator but only one being used. But I guess being a car alternator it's designed to hook up to lights and other electric components that aren't there on this old tractor. Thanks Saab.

Figured I'd come back and finish this thread out any case anybody else is as big a dumb*** as I am. I replaced the battery last year when the old one died. Well, I did it again, I took the word of some kid makin minimum wage at the local farm store that he was givin me the right battery. This was a sealed battery so it didn't have any filler caps on it. He sold me a 6 volt battery for a 12 volt tractor. It's a good thing the alternator was bad or I would have been wearin the acid when it blew up. So I bought another battery and it fires up first crank now every time.

I pulled all the body off of it cause I was gettin ready to re-wire all the electrical when i found this out. So while it's apart, it's gettin a fresh new coat of Massey Red paint and decals. Don't know how I could have ever doubted a Massey. They always work right, even when the operator doesn't.
