when replacing glow plugs - be very VERY careful not to break the tip off inside the cylinder...
and yes - replace that glow plug relay if you are having hard starts... makes a world of difference! I replaced mine and she started like a champ after!

Thanks for the great article. I used it to replace the injectors in my truck and it worked great. A few things that I'd like to point out that may save some others some headache.
1. get a hex wrench and remove the little spout that directs the oil downward off the injector. If you remove that little spout you can easily pry the injector out with a small breaker bar. I broke the first one I did.
2. When installing the new injectors DON'T get a dead blow hammer or rubber mallet and pound the injector in. I broke one of mine doing this. I found the easiest way is to twist them side to side a few times loosening them up and than tap very lightly a few times and then twist them some more and tap a few more times until you feel it bottom out. It's very difficult to get them to seat right by forcing them straight in.
3. Replace the little injector wiring harness while you're in there. They cost around $90 for each side and the little clips on them seem to wear out and come lose.
4. When you pull the old injector out put the new one in immediately. Have the new one in the other hand when you pull the old one out and stuff the new one in there asap. This will prevent very much oil from draining into your cylinder and save lots of work turning the engine over manually later. Still manually turn it a few revolutions but doing it this way will make it much easier.
That's just my .02 from doing it. Hope it helps someone. Mad props to the OP for the article. It saved me $1500.

DO NOT INSTALL THE GLOW PLUGS YET!
next is to put put the valve covers back on and only put 2-3 bolts to temporarily seal them down.
then BUMP, don't crank, bump the motor over with the key 15-20 times. what this does is slowly pushes the oil and fuel out the glow plug holes and contains everything under the valve cover. after you are sure that the motor has made 2-3 complete revolutions then you can stop. this can also be done by turning the crank over by hand using a socket and a ratchet on the crankshaft.
after this is done remove the valve covers and reinstall the glowplugs and the under valve cover harness, plug in the injectors and glow plugs.

also known as good hand strength resulting is a forceful grip with the fingers.
