Default Upgrade questions

Hey folks,
I'm new to the diesel world and am looking to install a TS 6 pos chip and a cold air intake for starters. Previous owner of my truck had already installed a 4" down pipe and exhaust.

I'm in California and have a few questions.

1) With the TS chip installed, when it's time to get the truck smogged, will the stock setting of the chip suffice with no signs of the truck being altered? Or, will I have to remove it every time to smog?

2) What is the best (Ca. legal) cold air intake that will give the most HP and Torque?

3) Anyone know of a dyno testing facility in Sacramento area?

Thanks,

Rich

I for one would not run a K&N. They have had reports of letting to much dust pass threw and wearing out parts. I run an AFE and am happy with it. You can also look up S&B

Fellow Californian here, so I know what boat you're in.

As for the chip: stock position SHOULD be enough. Technically it is acceptable (assuming you have no codes) because they can't control what you do to your truck, only what you do on public roads, and if they can't prove you're running a hot tune on public roads then it's okay. So the presence of a tuner does not immediately disqualify you. However CA smog is a VERY place by place thing. Some smog techs will fail you for it, or even other stuff that shouldnt fail you.

As for the air filter, smog has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with air intake filters. Aside from complete removal of the filter (which even still might be okay) they cannot fail you for ANY intake system as they do not impose restrictions on intake systems. Again, I have heard of places failing people for intakes, but there is documentation from CARB and the Smog Board that list what they care about. It specifically says they ARE NOT interested in intakes.

everyone says that about k&n but honestly id doubt they would let thier air filters be that bad.

also 7.3s are nearly bullet proof so if there is somehow small speck of dust it shouldn't do any damage at all. plus k&n tested their filters in the dessert and they pasted thier high test but its up to you afe also makes a great cold air intake but its way over priced in my opinion

not that it matters a whole lot but it is extremely simply to remove the chip. i dont know how often they make you guys get your stuff tested, assume annually but it literally would take 2 min to take it out and vice versa.
