getting educated
As a new guy to the diesel world im trying to learn as much as I can, but I have questions . First whats the differece between a tuner and a programmer? Also what is a chip ? which is better ? Do you run all 3 together ? or is there a combination of the 3 that you run ? Ive been out of town for a month or so , I have a couple more to go so im doing my research any intel is helpful. Thank you

Tuner programmer the same pretty much they plug into your obdll port take a few minutes to upload program to vehicle, the chip is typically "on the fly" like a ts 6 position "custom" tuned by a site sponsor or any diesel site that does so. Personally I like the 6 position I have one tuned by php or power hungry performance. First before you do any performance enhancers I would get a set of gauges to monitor everything and do an air intake.

I have plans for a cold air intake , 4 inch exhaust gauges etc, from what ive read so far is depending on what connecting rods I have its just a safe bet to stay around 450 hp.So thats the goal, So im doing as much research as I can before I break out my wallet. Ive been looking at the Edge CTS Evolution programmer and it comes with I believe 8 gauges and 4 different setting . With a cold air intake ,4 inch exaust and this programmer I think I can reach my goal .But ive been reading alot about chips and tuners and programmers so it gets a little confusing , thanks for your help.

Well I don't think any of the 7.3 have pmr's I could be wring think those are in the 6.0, it's all what you want and needs are for the truck? Towing, pulling or just dd? Personally I just didn't like the fact you could only have 4 settings in the cts that was the deal breaker for me. Hope this helps

no.... the 7.3's have PMR's. some late 2000's, it's a mix in 2001, and 2002, 2003 have PMR's.1994- 1999 are all forged rods. now in my opinion, edge is a highy overrated, over priced and under powered. and you only get 4 settings. also, some of the perameters that the edge unit looks at are thru factory sensors. now why would you believe a factory sensor that the reading is probably altered by the programmer? i think you would be the best off with a TS style 6 position chip, boost, trans, and EGT gauges, a 4" TURBO back exhaust and a intake. the 6637 kit is all you really need. the AFE and like kits are just more money for a box that doesn't do much.

your truck will have PMR's which isn't good if you're wanting 450 hp, i wouldn't go over 400hp, thats when they're known to start breaking... i'll make you a list that'll get you there....
Cold air intake
4" turbo back exhaust
Egt, Trans, and Boost gauges
BTS transmission (there are other companies but BTS is THE BEST one out there)
garret ball bearing turbo ( there are plenty of other turbos but for what you need this would work just fine)
Stage II single shot injectors (160/100)
TS style chip with custom tunes (PHP, Swamps, Beans, Tyrant, DP Tuner, and there are many more tuners out there too)
That should get you a solid 350-400 hp depending upon how aggressive you go on your tuning, someone feel free to add or comment on that list, pretty sure i've covered everything though
