Disconnecting the Crank Case Breather

When I built my cold air intake I noticed more oil than I liked coming from my crankcase breather laying in the intake hose and headed into the turbo. So, I popped it off, washed it in the parts washer, turned it around on the valve cover, and ran a hose down behind the engine. Of course plugged the hole in the intake as well. There is way more "breathing" going on than I expected. It outs out air like a mini exhaust and even smokes a little when its cold till it warms up. Anyone see a problem with the mod? and why so much gasses coming out (piston ring trouble?)? maybe its normal for the 7.3L?

No problem at all with it.

It is normal for our trucks unless its an extreme amount.

ok what do you mean an extreme ammount because b4 i replaced the orings on the breather it would let out alot of smoke, and im also getting the same smoke out of the top of the dipstick tube

A not so technical test would be to take your oil filler cap off and flip it upside down on the hole on the valve cover. If it is blown off, there is too much. It will vibrate but it shouldn't get blown off.

ok, what does it mean if it gets blown off?

Too much pressure would cause the cap to blow off the hole...

That is the idea... Like I said, Not a technical test.

jeeze i wish my truck would idol that smooth,.... ill have to try that tomorrow.

Short Hauler 04-14-2011 09:08 AM

Now you've got me worried again. I better try that test too!!

so where should we run it? i have seen some people state they run it behind the cab but to where? do you put a breather element on the end of the hose?
