Disconnecting the Crank Case Breather
When I built my cold air intake I noticed more oil than I liked coming from my crankcase breather laying in the intake hose and headed into the turbo. So, I popped it off, washed it in the parts washer, turned it around on the valve cover, and ran a hose down behind the engine. Of course plugged the hole in the intake as well. There is way more "breathing" going on than I expected. It outs out air like a mini exhaust and even smokes a little when its cold till it warms up. Anyone see a problem with the mod? and why so much gasses coming out (piston ring trouble?)? maybe its normal for the 7.3L?

No problem at all with it.
It is normal for our trucks unless its an extreme amount. |
Thanks!!

A not so technical test would be to take your oil filler cap off and flip it upside down on the hole on the valve cover. If it is blown off, there is too much. It will vibrate but it shouldn't get blown off.
|
ok, what does it mean if it gets blown off?
|
Too much pressure would cause the cap to blow off the hole...
That is the idea... Like I said, Not a technical test. |
jeeze i wish my truck would idol that smooth,.... ill have to try that tomorrow.
|
Now you've got me worried again. I better try that test too!!
|
so where should we run it? i have seen some people state they run it behind the cab but to where? do you put a breather element on the end of the hose?
|
You can just run the hose down the frame rail and let it vent into the atmosphere... You can run it into a catch can of some sort. I've also heard of guys tie it back into the exhaust system.
|
ok i just did that test and when i pulled the cap off there was smoke coming out of the fill tube, and the preasure blew the cap off very easy, what does this mean?

haha okay, just throw me off cause it didnt do it till after the fix
|
i just did this on mine. i got a 3 1/2 PVC coupling and got rid if the factory plastic pipe with the vent port. turned the breather around, and 6' of 5/8 heater hose got me about half way under the cab. i just let it dump there. i should have gotten 3/4 hose tho.

Stupid question, Whats the benefit to the BD ccv kit really? Is it merely an expensive catch can and you don't actually need any sort of extra stuff beyond just a vent hose? Assuming you dont mind the underside of your rig gettin a little oily vapor?

just did what I mentioned in the very first post over a year ago and mine in working just fine. a piece of hose is all you need. I have never experienced any oil along the bottom of my truck either.
