Default Looking at Excursion 7.3L/have questions

Hello

I came across a 00 Excursion with 200K miles from a dedicated diesel truck owner. He had it 9 months but wants to downsize. He said the 4x4 didn't work and he replaced it with Manual Warn locking hubs. I understand that I have to get out to switch them and that won't always be convenient in the snow patches here or on the boat ramps. I was wondering could I have the Ford parts put back on to have it back to operating it from the cab?

Also on start up he says it produces white smoke for a few minutes and thinks it is either a O ring on a injector, glow plug or glow plug relay. What does white smoke at start up mean? He says it will do this when it isn't plugged up on a cold day otherwise there is no smoke.

Any recommended mods to get more power and fuel economy? I thought a 4" exhaust, intake system or filter and tune. It will be a DD and occassionally tow a 8K or 9K trailer.

Generally the OEM parts are fairly expensive, mos go to the manual lockers. But if you choose to go back OEM the conversion should be fairly simple. There are a couple of vacuum lines plugged off and swap back on the OEM hubs, just make sure they are in good working order if you go used.

When my 7.3L did this I had bad glow plugs and a bad GPCM. All diesel Excursions got the GPCM. White smoke at startup in my experience is raw fuel leaving a cold cylinder. But there are other possibilities, start checking the glow plugs and GPCM first, I would think they would be the most likely as it does not smoke when warm. My 6.0L had the same symptoms and it was 4 bad glow plugs. Good warm starts no smoke, white smoky cold (40-50def F) starts, very little smoke on cold starts when plugged in. Check the GPCM and glow plugs.

Go with your list but make sure to get guages to monitor EGT's, especially when towing.
