Default Turbo

I am a Cummins guy and know very little about PSDs. My dad has an 97 f250 4x4. His turbo has about had it. I am looking for an inexpensive replacement for it as a gift. He doesn't have any mods on his truck so even a stock one would be great. Also are there any other years that bolt into his truck?

Are you sure it is the turbo? What symptoms does it have?

Any turbo from a 94.5 to 97 will fit fine. There is no upgrade turbo for the OBS other then the D-66... Find yourself a stocker to throw back on or get that one rebuilt.


As was asked before, what makes you think the turbo is bad?

He is getting little to no boost pressure under acceleration and while driving (I checked the intercooler boots). Also looking at the blades they have been warn down. Not to mention that his truck has 245k on it. I drove his buddies same year with a new stock turbo on it, it had twice the power and you could feel the turbo kick in. His buddies' has no mods.

Is there an intercooler on the truck? Should not be...

I would be very concerned about the worn blades... only thing that can do that is dusting, and that will also take out the motor. If there is no movement in the turbo shaft, I would replace the compressor wheel and do a compression test.

Sorry I have an intercooled Cummins, I do not know any other name for the rubber portion of the intake tubs. If I replace the compressor wheel will I have to have it balanced?

He changes his oil on a regular basis to try to lessen any damage form dust. He lives in New Mexico and encounters a lot of blow sand.

Its ok, you just said no mods and then the IC boots... I just had to ask!

No, you can get a Wicked Wheel from one of our sponsers for about $80 and throw that on there. Do a tymar filter on it, it will filter better then the factory set up and last forever.

I would still do a compression test, even with badly worn wheels it should still build boost.

Might check the up pipes behind the turbo, they come up from the exhaust manifolds and feed the turbo. They tend to leak over time right at the collector at the turbo. Check for soot around the pipes.

I will check those things out. Thank you. Like I said I know little to nothing about the PSD if you have any others suggestion.

I was going to suggest two things, #1 make sure you have good fresh oil of the correct rating... sounds like that should be fine, but doublecheck the rating. Should be cf-4/sh or cg-4/sh. The oil in a powerstroke is critical. If the oil is foamy, it would act as described. #2 and the most likely, is the up-pipes leaking. Let us know what you find.
