Default egt gauge

I am in need of a get gauge, should I mount it to the dp or the manifold? And if at the dp what temps should I look foe and be worried about? And same for at the manifold? Thanks a lot!

EGT is probably best in the manifold, since you are trying to monitor temps to protect the cylinders/pistons, so you should grab temps close to them. As far as temps, I believe 1200 is starting to get into the danger zone. 1250 sustained is max from international, short bursts above is ok.

I think this depends on where it can go without interfering and ease of install, but theoretically I'd recommend at the back of the manifold after the last cylinder. That way if one cylinder is running hot, you don't risk missing it, but you're still close to the cylinders. I believe there's a flat spot on the bend right before the up pipe.

Look at it as a rounded off estimate. You only have one sensor in one manifold, on one side of the motor. I have mine in the rear of mine, because I could get at it. Because of the turbine and because it is not open pipes, you are always going to have some backpressure.

But if it was that important to you to catch the reading off all of the cylinders and not miss any, then you'd pull both the manifolds off and tap a port right outside each cylinder. At around $100 to $300 a gauge... Not feasible for most us... Who get an idea of what is going on and call that fine.

I can tell you. If you have too many gauges to watch, then you lose focus on why you got them... To have fun driving what is there. Protection is paramount, but make that easy to ID.

The best spot for the pyro is probably in the manifold.

Your EGTs are going to depend on your trucks condition, mods, what you're hauling and how you drive. Your sig says all stock, so as long as you don't have excessive boost or exhaust leaks you should be running close to where i'm at which is about 300 on the level freeway 55mph-65mph and I peg about 550 when I get down on it or go up a medium grade hill. When I had my long bed full of cargo on the way down to San Diego last year I was running a stock powerplant with a short ram intake and got as high as 900*-1100* in the NorCal mountain passes.

Was wondering if you are running chipped or stock?

Cause I am chipped:
- Run 200-300F at idle. (0.5psi Boost, 550psi HPOP)
- run 300-400F if no load flat below 50mph or going downhill (1.2-2.0pai Boost, 550-800psi HPOP)
- run 500-600F on the highway (2.2-2.5psi Boost, 800-900psi HPOP)
- WOT at 900F... (No load, 22psi Boost, 2950psi HPOP)

If I run on my chip bypass setting, my EGT is actually a bit higher. So, I'm wondering what is normal = If mine is running a bit high -OR- if yours is running low and you are doing something I should look into to try to get mine to run lower.

Good question. I always though my EGTs were normal, but then again I had nothing to compare them to. I'm running stock with just a short ram intake.
  • I drive super conservatively. For example I follow the speed limit, accelerate slowly, etc.
  • 25 mph and above, I use cruise control.
  • I live in CA, so naturally I am subject to whatever Diesel #2 is. I don't know if that formula contributes to my EGTs in any way or not.
  • Before I got the truck, It had a 6 pos tuner. It's also possible the computer was reflashed so that it runs leaner?
  • The last thing i'm thinking, and hoping its not, is that something is causing me to run lean. I haven't noticed a decrease in performance.

I think my EGTs are low mainly because I drive my truck like a grandpa. I have a CBR600RR so that's where I satisfy my speed addiction. I'm getting my 4" turbo back in the mail any day now so they might drop even lower.

So I'm thinking if it's a CA model and not a 49-stater, then it's running a little leaner. There was a different PCM hex code for CA models.

I drive conservative most of the time, but have a play side also. With my mod's, if I watch how I drive, I can get between 17-19 mpg. Where as before the mod's, new it was 11-12 mpg. A few mods brought that to 14mpg. Years and quite a bit more to bring it to what it is now.

Yeah I bought it where I grew up in WA but I do remember the original owner saying he bought it in CA. Is the PCM the only thing that is different?
