Default 94 mild performance questions

OK, nothing is set in stone yet, I'm just feeling this one out.

I'm happy with my relatively stock 94. it's been a good truck for the two weeks I've had it, and when I solve the fuel leak I'll be even happier. 215 hp (least it says that on the valve cover, now it probably has a few less, it's got 140,000 miles on er) is enough, really.

But, the tinkerer in me wants more. for no reason.
I just want more. because I can.

so, how hard is it to hit 300hp? can it be done with the stock fuel system? Truck has a 3.5" downpipe running to a full length 4" exhaust. I have 2 friends who work automotive, both with a fair bit of diesel repair, but not diesel performance. one ran a 7.3 towtruck for a while. he claims the motor runs well and the turbo sounds good and repsonds well. no major issues there.

I might have access to the intercooler system from a later model 7.3 (same guy who ran the towtruck has a couple of old motors around, 2 stock turbos and 1 intercooler system), and was eye'in it up pretty hard.
naturally I'd go with a cold air of some form, hopefully an oilless one.

my issue is in tuning. OBD1 sucks. is there a decent programmer (I live in buttfuck nowhere saskatchewan, so they gotta ship here) for the 94s? would the later model turbo be a good idea to swap on, and if so, how hard would that be to do? the spare turbo has maybe 117,000km on it. I'm not worried about it if I can use it easily enough.

basically, my question is, in short form:
What is the best most efficient way to add power without overdoing the fuel system. And how badly, if I don't need to upgrade the fuel system, will the fuel economy suffer.

That is all, thank you.

the nice thing about diesel is that usually profromance upgrades also increase fuel milage, I would start with cold air intake before anything else. Let it breath

the exhaust is the first thing to do and as thats already done the intake would be next, try a napa 6637 filter and a chunk of 4 inch pipe and you are done there.
there are several chips for your truck, i have a TS 6 pos, and it works pretty well but there are definatly better. i have had good luck with Tony Wildman tunes, from total diesel performance.

fair enough sir. I'll try it out when I get the chance.

this weekend and probably till the end of march or mid april I'll be focused almost entirely on mechanical fixes or driveline updates.
might get a different balancer (eyein up a fluidampr, although I don't know how much the 7.3 benefits from one, like the 6.5 chev does) if I can find one, and kinda wanna ditch the dual mass flywheel.

will rig up some form of intake.
Actually I might be able to steal the one from the towrig donor truck that the guy I know runs. he threw his own mill into the donor truck and then his own towing rig on the back of it. might be able to get a fair bit from that thing, depending on what will bolt right up, actually. donor truck is a 99 F450.

will know more after the weekend. thanks for the tips folks, will keep everyone updated.

The NAPA 6637 filter is the way to go for intake..... pretty cheap, lasts a long time and easy to install. I have a pic of mine in my albums, take a look, simple, cheap, and does a great job, can hear the air going through it while it runs.

hm, I'll certainly try that out. there is enough scrap large sized exhaust pipe lying around the shop to make a pretty decent tube for it as well.

it is a powerstroke and not an IDI with a turbo?

if it is a powerstroke it has OBDII

as for hiting 300 you need gauges first. then you have the exhaust so that leaves an intake. the DIY 6637 is a good setup for the money. then you need some programing, beans, swamps, gearhead, PHP, wildman all have good tunes but will only put you at about 220 to the wheels. wth good tuning you shouldnt need an intercooler but they dont hurt. you canmake an intercooler from a SD work bt you will have to modify the pipes to fit and you will need an E99 spyder. you will need more fuel to hit 300 and it can be done on the stock turbo. you can go with a set of stage one injectors and that should put you right at the 300-350hp mark.

fair enough. time to start saving my pennies I suppose.
it is, as far as I can tell, a first year powerstroke. manufactured 06/94, and has some things that are pretty similar to the 99 superduty towtruck I've been around some. injection system is the same, fuel fiter housing is the same, etc. dunno if the IDI had those same features. if it did, I'll have to figure out what it is for sure.

anyway,that list puts me at...450..probably 150...300-450, 1800 (ouch. . . ). . .
bout 3 grand. heh.

the IDI was mechanical injection, if its the same you have a powerstroke.

that list will put you at 350hp to the ground tops. no one measures hp at the fly wheel only at the ground.
