Default Thinking of getting a 2009 did the DPF improve

Hi all. I did the search here and on other forums and I am getting conflicting experiences on the stock 6.7. Some say the mileage is crap ~10 mpg but some here say they get 17-18 with a gooseneck and even 23 on the highway.

I even heard about a class action based on the DPF issues alone. I am ready to get this 3500 manual transmission and I do not want to get a hog. I have a F350 7.3 that realsitically gets 18.5 with mix driving here in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado and I pull about 60%. However 70% of those pulls are on a 35 mph road and I take it easy and believe it or not doesn't really suck that much fuel even though it is not highway driving.

The reports of < 13 mpg unloaded is just terrible.

I am not interested in an automatic just the manual otherwise my wife will NOT drive it and my daughter won't be inclined to learn how to drive a stick. So if you have a manual 6.7, even better if you can share your reliability and mpg experiences.

I do not race, sled pull or have need to modify for more power but I do not know if this dealer is mod friendly. I am financing this truck so I do not really want to mess with the emissions and loose warranty. I know the reputation of the 5.9s and I am just wondering what the mpg and dpf class action of the 6.7 is really all about.

EDIT:

To be specific just in case someone is from the Albuquerque area, the truck has ~20K miles. Do you also know if whether these 2 dealers, Larry Miller and Melloy Dodge are okay with DPF mods. Again, if the fuel economy would improve with delete, then that is the only reason I will do it. I live in Sandoval county which has no current or proposed emissions testing. Also do any of these delete kits have an option to put it back.

Would the mileage have improve by the 20K mark or is it further down the road.

Thanks again

I have found this argument about my warranty concerns. What do you guys think?

From this page: Dodge 6.7 Cummins Owners speak out about DPF delete | MyCarlady.com

3. YOU HAVE NOT VOIDED YOUR WARRANTY. Under consumer protection laws, the dealership MUST prove that the modification you did caused the damage if you go in for a warranty claim. Since the two things you’ve done actually improved the engine, they’ll never be able to prove that… but you’ll probably have to have a knock-down drag-out fight with them… but usually once you say lawyer, or throw a fit in front of several potential car sales, they won’t put up a fight. They can void your emissions system warranty, because you’ve completely removed it via the DPF delete kit. So yes, if your 6.7 has a horrible problem and throws a rod or explodes, they will be replacing that $15k monster via your warranty because there’s no way an EGR or DPF would cause that.

So, overall, and my personal thoughts… some lobbyist in Washington put pressure on congress and the EPA to release these standards without fully understanding the principles of diesel fuel and was just tired of seeing soot rolling out of exhaust pipes. Bottom line, the emissions controls worsened the vehicles to the point where they burn 30% more fuel to create just as much pollution and go the same distance, plus they slow kill themselves. How do you explain that??? You want to enforce a new emissions system that burns 30% more of a precious resource that will eventually run out.

Hi my 2010 ctd is bone stock (also stock 245/75R17 tires) i know they are tiny and look horribly awkward but gets 17mpg via lie-ometer. But it is accurate as i hand calculated it based on miles travelled on highway over a number of tanks while empty.i am in canada and we base fuel consumption slightly different. Eg. 13 liters of fuel to travel 100 kilometers whick is about 62 miles. My tank is 129 liters and i get 975 kiilometers. Which is just over 600 miles per tank. Adding a good diesel conditioner will help increase mileage. I have have experimented with 1-2 ounces of acetone for each 10 gallon of diesel . but so far it is too soon to see any results as i will need to go without for a good long trip to see any difference. I will be deleting emissions soon and hope for a change in performance. See if the 6.7 is really a bored and stroked 5.9 .

Now that truck is deleted with a smarty jr 67me i have found that my economy is best set up in fuel economy setting sw1 and timing 4 with stock 245/70/17. I get a best of 10liters/100 kilometers or 20mpg. I have ran on sw3 timing 4 and achieved 13L/100km or 19 mpg. I have now changed to 35" kelly safari tires and i have gotten on sw1 setting 11L/100k or 19mpg with 35" tires. What ive noticed is that rpm has dropped 300. My cruising rpm is at 100kph/60 mph is at 1350. So there is a little lag when passing vehicles. Since deleting the throttle response is faster and the engine is running great. Running full synthetic mobil oil. Deleting i think has been worth it. Ive noticed i hace been getting some blowback into air filter but maybe it from using the exhaust brake and combined with the ccv filter starting to get saturated. That filter is coming off next.
