Default Edge vs Smarty and guages

Ok Im a newbie with my first diesel. I have an 07 Ram 3500 QuadCab LongBox ST dually. Ive read lots of stuff on the chips and so forth. Im after some hp increase but more interested in mpg increase. Im not here to get stupid and see how much hp I can do because I probably cant affored it. Not looking to see how much black smoke I can blow either.

Now as I currently understand it (and I could very well be wrong), the Edge Juice also serves as engine monitor whereas the smarty needs additional guages. If so, which is more cost effective? And which things should I monitor the most. I was leaning to EGT Boost pressure.

On a normal basis I will be pulling a 34 ft gooseneck trailer somewhere in the 12-15k pound range. Currently getting 10-12 loaded and 16-18 empty.

the edge is more cost effective, but the smarty is a better tuner, EGT's are arguably the most important thing in need of monitoring, but everything is important to monitor, however if i were you I'd go with the H&S mini maxx or black maxx depending on your budget, i think they make better tunes than edge, not as good as smarty, but a happy medium

It also depends on if you want to delete your DPF.

well i just kinda assumed that was what he wanted to do since he mentioned blowing smoke, he said he didn't want to blow a ton, but that leaves me to believe he wouldn't be against removing the dpf, i have no idea who makes a good dpf intact tuner, banks probably

If deleting the DPF gets me way more mpg I wouldnt mind doing that. From what I hear Banks is like HD paying for name. My worry is that in time I may have to have a CDL for the trailer and stuff so I dont want to be spanked by DOT for not having DPF. Dont really want to pay fines for no good reason so I dont want massive black clouds of smoke.

yeah deleting the dpf is the best way to get better mpg, but if i were in your shoes i'm not sure what i'd do, personally I'd get a Black Maxx, air intake, DPF and EGR delete and go from there, cause those are going to yield the best mileage

H&S is fixing to release dpf friendly tunes but for the best possible mileage the dpf has to go.

take some advice from a hotshot driver, that would be me, delete the DPF run a 5" in turbo back kit WITH A MUFFLER! DOT willl not even bat an eye at the noise level of the truck. buy the black maxx or mini maxx, both of which lukesdiesel will hook you up with, i also put a S&B cold air intake on my truck and i have the H&S EGR delete kit that dodgeram082500 are gonna help me install as soon as i can get the time to go up there to get it done. i love the mini maxx because like the edge it monitors all the engine vitals, i was able to recalibrate my speedo for my tire size, i personally like to monitor the EGTs, Fuel Pressure (because i learned that if the fuel pressure starts to drop in will indicate you need to change the fuel filter and also if you dont have enough pressure it will eventually be the demise of the injector pump), also the boost, and for ***** and giggles i like to keep an eye on the intake temp just to see the difference in a dirty filter and a clean one.

I would get the h&s black maxx or mini maxx, they have the guages built into them, they are adjustable on the fly, and will be able to add transmission tuning to them, in the next week or so. Along with one of them get a 5" tbe with a muffler, and a egr delete kit. I am sure one of the site sponsors can put you together a really good deal. Smarty isnt to bad either, but it does not have guages with it and does not have transmission tuning with it either, some trucks smarty runs better on some trucks h&s runs better on some. Smarty doesnt put out much smoke on there newer high hp tunes but h&s does. Smarty has blown alot more head gaskets then h&s has also. In the future also the blackmaxx not sure on minimaxx will be able to run a water meth system thru them also, so look at it this way h&s= good tunes/tcm tuning/built in guages/watermeth and smarty=good tunes.
