Default What do I do first?

I just bought an 08 6.7 Cummins. I don't know anything about diesels though. I have experience with gas engines but I'm not sure what the similarities and differences are. Can anyone give me some advice on where to start with upgrades? What are some things that I should do right away? My ulitimate goal is to take it to the track and drag it but that is a long way off, right now I just want to get some good performance out of it and spank some people in a big truck!

well number 1 you have to ask yourself if you want to keep the DPF filter on it or not.
number 2- how much horsepower do you want out of it
number 3-how much money do you want to spend
number 4-what do you want.

I'll check out that site, thanks.

To answer your questions.

#1 - I have no idea, I've never had to deal with a DPF before. That's one of the things I was wondering. I've done some reading on it and a lot of people say it hurts the performance. I'm not really sure what it does exactly, something about reburning the exhaust I think. I'm experienced with gas engines, air comes in and goes out.

#2 - I eventually want to get over 1000hp. I'm not unrealistic though so I know that is a long way off. I want to learn and do most of the work myself, I don't want to just take it somewhere and pay someone to do it all. The only exception to that is the exhaust. I like wrenching on engines, not too great at welding.

#3 - The cost is not so much a concern as are some easy mods to start. I'm new to this so I want to find some things I can do that aren't too in depth and then get a little more into it with each mod. I want to add turbos eventually but I'm not sure how in depth of a job that is since I've never used them before. I'd also like to get a Smarty for it if they ever release one for the 6.7. Beyond that I don't know where to start on a diesel. I have read a few posts on here but I'm lost. "64 over s480 some flux 5's dual cp3, springs, studs, bypass kits, cam, fully built tranny, smarty, mp-8" I know what springs, studs and a cam are. But 64 over s480? flux 5's dual cp3? mp-8? bpyass kits, what is being bypassed?

#4- What do I want? I want a truck and will smoke my old Mach 1, don't know if that is possible since I don't know what the numbers look like on these trucks when they are built up.

What I would really like is for there to be a book that would tell me how a diesel works, what's the same and different from gas, and what mods do what. I guess I'll have to learn all the jargon as I go along.

well 1000hp will be insaine out of a 6.7, you would have to delete the DPF for sure that is a filter trap put on all of the new diesel's to trap the soot from the motors for the EPA to be happy that will have to be cut off to get 1000hp but it will void the warrenty if you do it. You would have to get some new injecters,turbo,chip,intake,5" exhaust, water meth kit,cam if they make one,and bigger fuel pump.

From what ive found so far the edge chip can get you the most power 100hp and 250lb ft of torque and i would get a banks intake, also if your going to delete the DPF check out H&S performance you will have to email them as for the 5" delete system.

I think there is a few places that make injecters for the 6.7, but not sure on turbo's

A turbo is a turbo. There are no specifics that limit a turbo to that engine. The 6.7 has a variable rate turbo. Which is great because it has the exhaust brake integrated into it, but that is pretty much it. If you put around the city too much, that DPF is gonna clog up, and the slider shaft on the turbo is going to clog up with soot, and the exhaust brake is going to stop working.

The thing about the 6.7 is that it is a lose lose. Either you have to run it hard to keep the DPF clear, or it cleans itself out, which also uses alot of fuel. so basically, you will never see decent fuel mileage with the DPF still intact.

If you want to start out modding your truck. Go with an aftermarket intake for your truck. Exhaust doesn't do jack, unless you delete the DPF.

Rid the DPF and EGR first. Then add a programmer (Edge or PMT) stack it with the MP-8, Add a cold air intake then get a lift pump. Once you get to that point you will be about 450 HP. From there you have to decide how you want to make big power.
