Default Oil Cooler

I hate to sound like I'm beating a dead horse, but what should be on the shopping list for an oil cooler swap? No, I'm not dropping the big bucks on a remote oil cooler. Yes, I did the EGR delete. My truck is a 2003, kinda explains the screen name, huh.

Oh yeah, any tips (I've got the alternator R&R licked) would be appreciated as well. Sure I tore into it for the EGR delete a few months ago, but that doesn't necessarily mean I was doing things the easy way.

Finally, I spoke with FCDP and they stated that once clogged (I'm cruising at 15*~18*) a rebuild kit isn't an option, R&R.

Thanks, Bombers.

Why wouldn't a rebuild be an option? It includes the new cooler section, that's absurd. The full kit is a waste of money since it just comes with a new cover. Who cares about the cover.

A rebuild is fine. I don't understand why they would have said that.

It shouldn't be any harder than the EGR delete, basically have to remove the same parts. I "think" you can leave the intake manifold on if you don't have the old style intake manifold with the x-over in the rear. Though I'm planning on taking mine off either way to get it out of the way.

No secret tips, just do it man!

Dude! It's an 03, it HAS to have the old manifold with the crossover in the rear.

Anyway, I found this pn at Tousley 3C3Z-6A642-CA. When compared to MKM, it has the o-rings and screen to swap out the oil cooler. Sweet. As of 7/12/12, Tousley needs ~ $270.00. Not too bad, gonna go ahead and odor it.

Oh yeah, should probably get intake gaskets too, huh.

You got it.... if it were me I would look on ebay or somewhere and get a later itake ,then dut off the little boss that holds the original egr cooler. What this does is it makes changing the ICP sensor alot easier and with that boss out of the way you can remove the intake without removing the turbo, I did that on mine and it is alot easier to work on now. Iv'e seen them selling for $85

I needed another intake anyway, don't like the cross over, had to heli-coil the intake elbow when doing the Banks stuff. Good call, Bob.

Yeah that damn cross over gets in the way of IPR big time! But what the heck. I got plenty of practice pulling and torqueing intake manifold!

The Big Brown Truck came yesterday and dropped of a new to me intake manifold for my 2003! Have any of you held the intake gaskets to your intake to look for port mismatch? If I learned anything about intakes from all of the years that I have played with my Mustang, I learned that a little port matching goes A LONG WAY.

Speaking of which, just exactly how reuseable are the intake gaskets? Or am I going to have to evaluate them when I take off the intake. I'm not opposed to buying new, but if the existing ones are still serviceable, why?

Next is the oil cooler from Tousley and then it's oil cooler swap time.

Recap for the scan readers: I already have a coolant filter and EGR delete.

I would just get the intake gaskets. I've seen cases where they were reusable and some cases where they were not. To me, it wasn't worth the chance of the down time so I just got them ahead.

port matching will help, sure, but it's no where near important on a boosted engine as it is on a N/A. I'd be interested to see where they line up though...

What'd you give for the intake manifold. Didn't know you were looking for one (should have checked in on this thread more often) I have two of them sitting in the garage. I want to make my own ported manifold.

Yer probably right about porting, a friend gave me the same forced induction versus porting speech. I think I'll just put intake gaskets on the shopping list with the oil cooler.

I gave $85+ shipping on eBay for that 2004 intake. The outside is really clean/painted, but the inside has a little build up, certainly not a deal killer by any means. It looks cleaner inside than the one on the truck.

I've got stuff on the way, gonna start maybe Sunday, depends on how I feel after the pulls Saturday. Anyway, with the motorcycle and the 67 available, no need to hurry, therefore, the hot side of the turbo is getting cleaned up also.

I saw that the oil cooler 'cavity' will be full of oil when I pull the cooler, aside from being messy, do I need to drain some oil, or clean out the cavity prior to re-install? I mean, it's an oil cooler, it goes in the oil.
