Default 6.0L Synthetic VS. Conventional Oil

Hey Im new to the site and love it so far. Just picked up me a a 2005 F-250 cc 4x4 with 6.0L and a 6-speed. So far I love it but I got a feeling I'll love it even more when I get it out of the totally stock stage its in right now. I just hope I like as well as I did my 1996 f-250 7.3. Ive been hereing alot of people talk about synthetic oil and how much they love it so I thought I would ask too see what you think I always run rotella 15-40 if I would switch to synthetic do I still run 15-40 Ive seen some run 5-40 anyway love the site and the info on here

Synthetic has it's advantages indeed. Nothing wrong with today's conventionals either, but there is opportunity to improve. If you've been running 15W-40, no reason you can't stay with it. A lot of the newer oils are 5W-40's and the 15's are getting harder to find, but they are out there.
If you decide to go syn, one thing you might consider is the base stock of the oil. There are a couple version out there. YOu have those made with group III base stock, which are petroleum oils, just processed differently. Rotella syn. falls in this category.
Then there are those make "chemically" with group IV and V base stocks. This would include amsoil and mobil among others.
Both groups are good, here again, the group IV and V will have an edge.
Here's my little blurp on the advs. of synthetics:

Good luck and welcome to the site

Default Hi

Oil is something that is highly discussed on diesel sites. I personally run either Rotella or Motorcraft 15-40 and as stated alot are going to a 5-40. My personal experience from being under the hood of these monsters is that the conventional oil is a great choice. Many Powerstrokes come in with 250,000 + miles and are still clean under the valve covers given that they have been taken care of and had oil changed every 5000 or less. I have had some nasty engines come through that were running off some other products that promised 10,000 or more on oil changes and also rebuilt and or had guys I work with rebuild several. When considering what oil you are going to go with make sure you weigh the pros and cons and maybe even talk to a tech about it. You might be surprised what you hear.

i have heard that synthetics are not good for the 6.0 something with the injectors running off of oil pressure and synthetics screwing them up i run deloo 400 15-40 and have never had a problem

I had this exact question during my first oil change and asked which is better. The manager told me that with pulling a trailer and other heavy items as I do for long periods the syn will stay cleaner longer but still stick with the 7,500 mile normal use or 5,000 mile pulling and heavy driving schedule that ford put out. So I asked around and found that most of the techs said defenantly use syn of type iv or v if you do alot of haulin even though it is going to cost more due to the improved properties but if just doing normal driving then either will work. I only had two techs tell me that using syn is just throwing your money away. They also said to try and stay with the rating stated in the book for your temps so I keep with mobil syn 15-40. Hoped this helps

What ?? The 6.0L has HEUI and they do work with oil pressure. Do you have any facts to back that up? There are plenty of high mileage 6.0L's that have run syn. almost exclusively. Dino oils will work well, synthetics provide better protection & lubrication. Your injectors will quiet down with synthetic and have better lubrication. No more cold start romps. When I switched I noticed an improvement almost immediately.

Due to the high shearing of motor oil on the 6.0L( dino and syn. ) extended oil drains should be verified thru a certified testing laboratory.( Blackstone, Schaeffer's, etc. )

Some good reading here, I am also weighing the benefits of synthetic fluids in my 07 F250. Does anyone have the website or contact info for the afore mentioned certified testing labs ? What kind of fuel mileage increase might I see changing the engine, transmission (automatic) transfer case and both axles with synthetic oils? What are the drawbacks or downsides to this?

Man when i had my 05 6.0 i used the John Deere Synthetic oil you can get it at any John Deere dealer thats what my dad uses in all of our tractors and combines and cotton pickers and the diesels around our farm..it done good i liked it we ran about 10,000 miles before we changed the oil.
