1992 cummins
I just bought a 1992 cummins with 97,000 miles on it 2 weeks ago. Well ive been doing some research and have realized these motors can make some serious power. Im a diesel noob so bear with me here. I really would like to be making 500 whp and i know the VE pump has its limitations. So im looking into putting a p pump on it. My question is, is it possible to make close to 500whp with the VE and and still have it be a reliable daily driver. I have a p pumped motor in my shop right now thats out of a old bus at (least thats what the guy who it bought it from said) since i have all the parts pretty much there how hard would it to install a p pump into my first gen. Also if you guys have a recipe for getting 500hp out of your trucks i would like to hear them. And if there are things i should do first before trying to mod to prevent any premature failure on any components. I know i need gauges and a tac. heres pic of the truck and the other motor i have.

that is a very clean truck! is it 5 speed? if not then you are going to have to build your tranny to handle any power after doing slight mods. i cant keep my tranny from slipping from tuning my pump and a few other mods in my sig and it only has 30,000 miles on a rebuild! that engine you have on the side looks like it has a he351 turbo on it with a p-pump? what year bus is that out of?

yeah its a five speed. The motor thats in my shop was orginally going into a 1992 ford f350 i found the dodge for 5,500 so i bailed on the ford project. i think the guy said it was out a 1998. you think it would be worth swapping the pump? and is the turbo compatible with my intake manifold or could i use the one off that motor. the truck does have some mechanical gremlins like the t case is leaking and the rear main seal may be leaking i power washed it today so make sure and polished the wheels. with the mods you did to your truck is it still a good daily driver or are you constantly messing with it?

Pull the low milage VE engine and put it in the corner and put in the P-Pump 5.9 to do your hot rod stuff to, then when it melts you can have a good engine to replace it with and still have a good original truck.
Put in a good clutch while you have the engine out.
just a thought.
Really nice pick up by the way.

well mid to high 400whp would be nice. if i just sold that motor I had and used the money in my truck that would be pretty nice. how much would a cummins go for without a pump on it? The truck is nice but not perfect there is rust on it roof right above the windshield and on the passenger side rear fender well. im going to repaint the truck and put a spray in liner in a couple of months. i want to get the power situated before I start cutting up the body.

alright so p7100 is a must, now i need injectors, turbo and exhaust upgrade. anybody have an idea what a 5.9 cummins with out a pump would go for? I looked into the swap and whats deal with the injectors i need a bigger mm injector for the p pump right? and for a turbo what is good setup for for a daily driver? as for an exhaust a 4 inch straight pipe should be fine right?
