Default Not very realistic but what if?

the other day i was thinking about how i want to set up my twins when i do it and i had a crazy idea pop into my head. i know it is not realistic and it would take alot of tubing but what if you were to run a turbo off of like a 3 cyl perkins on each cylinder . Im not saying im gonna do it i was just curious.

The multiple small turbos versus one large turbo argument devolves into the question, "Is it harder to spool multiple small turbos or one large one?" That question is answered with a physics book, which says that for the same surface area one big wheel will have a smaller moment of inertia than several small wheels. Since the flow of a turbo is proportional to area of its wheel, one big turbo will flow as much air but spool faster than multiple small turbos.


Or something like that.

1st off Im not a physics major so this is all based on trying to cobble together what ive read.

The cylinder head, valves, intake, and cubic inches are all fixed (for the most part) so they will have the same amount of resistance no matter what turbos you bolt on.

The small turbos have a map range in which they can move air before they over speed or start making the air hot (and inefficient).

You want more boost to push more air through the restrictions (head, intake, valves). I think this is the main reason why they add the big turbo that will be able to run the big boost numbers efficiently. The boost is overcoming the restriction, forcing more cool air into the cylinders.

To me the 2 small turbos would be bad because now you have 1/2 of the heat trying to light them. They would be lagger yet still only have the map range to do 30-40 psi of boost.


Now if someone who actually knows what they are talking about could say if i am even on the right track it would be nice

Yeah i thought about that too one day then realized two small turbos only add cfms no more boost than about 40 where compound twins would be 55+ and more efficient

on a compound setup if you ever wonder how all that air still goes through the small turbo without over speeding it its cause they are just multipliers if you feed it more inlet pressure with the big charger helping it a little you can get more out with the same turbine speed
