Default air filters...

What's yall's thoughts on a k&n air filter? I checked my air filter yesterday and noticed it was a k&n in the factory air box. Are they good? Bad? It needs a good cleaning that's for sure.... But ive heard some stories that they dust the engines? Cause if they are crap im putting factory one back in... Need your thoughts asap as the dealership is open for a little bit longer. Thanks ahead of time!!

Cole

from what i understand they tend to dust the turbocharged engines. i wouldnt run one. i wouldnt take that chance on my 8k $$ engine.

I believe the K&N was upgraded after they were thought to have caused the dusted engines...pull you intake pipe and wipe a paper towel in it...if you see dirt, that's bad.

I ran a K&N on my 99 without issue (over 200k)...after reading the issues that aftermarket filters can cause (not limited to K&N); I chose to run only a OE paper filter. The only upgrade I would consider would be to the newer 6.7L airbox and its larger filter.

Hmm I will have to look into it for sure!! I'll pull my air intake off tomorrow after work.. I'll definately look into the 6.7 air box conversion. If it will actually do any good?

Do a search on it...they have longer pleats (something like 4") and a better design supposedly. If I were keeping my junk, I'd probably go that route...the stock filter has served me fine for the past eight years...and part of that has been with a SmartyJR.

So I threw the k&n in the trash and put the factory one in.. and I must say I've noticd some improvements.. turbo spoils faster.. turbo is louder... And its more responsive... The truck feels like a whole new animal...
