Default Tone Ring - Did you know.

Had a conversation with Scott at TST. He informed me that each tooth is 3 degrees and each gap is 3 degrees. Thought this may be helpful, for those of you concidering a crank tone ring mod, in figuring the advance you want.

On the crank shaft, behind the harmonic balancer, is a sprocket with teeth. There is also an electronic pickup that reads the teeth and tells the ECM the location and speed of the crank shaft in relation to the cam shaft which also has a sensor. The ECM figures this all out and tells the injector when to spray.
Some guys do what is called a "Tone Ring Mod". They file or elongate the holes that mount the sprocket on the front of the crank shaft and turn it to advance this portion of the timing sequence.
Does the same thing essentially as the Rokk timing advance mod that you buy.
As far as timing is concerned, this is only a taste of what can be done. The boxes and programmers do a much better job but, cost a lot more than a rat tail file.

So how many degrees can you reliably go before it really starts rattling?

I really can't answer that one honestly. Common sense tells me 3 degrees since this is actully a static type of timing change. Still may hear a little detination when you jump on it.
Whitmore submited a thread on CF that does this mod justice. Maybe someone knows how to slide it over here.

In regards to the tone ring and the Rokktech-are they detectable by dealers?

It"s highly unlikely they would ever detect it.
