Default School me on T/C controllers

I was planning on doing a mystery switch on my trans but my trans builder talked me out of it and said I should get a trans controller or a t/c lock-up controller instead. I've tried to do a bit of research but now I'm confused. I have an aftermarket t/c and valve body (fully built trans) so it seems like a trans controller wouldn't be neccessary but they are cheaper than a t/c lock-up converter. I guess I don't understand what they do or which one is the best. Or if I really need one. Please help!

A TC lock-up controller is more or less an automated mystery switch. The reason your trans builder talked you out of it is probably because you can do some damage to your truck if you misuse it.

So wouldn't a trans controller have control over TC lock-up as well? If so, then why are they cheaper? I'm really confused as to what they are trying to do. I need basics! (Apparently, I are dumb.)

Okay, let's try it this way...

What T/C lock-up controller or trans controller should I get for my 2005 and why?

Sorry I missed your last post. I think you might be mixing some things up. A lock-up controller does control TC lockup, and based on your first post the other thing you were asking about was an actual lock-up converter? A mystery switch can be built on your own for a couple bucks at radio shack. If you're looking at a controller, you really can't go wrong with one from a major trans brand. Maybe from the same company as your trans?

I guess first off I'm trying to see what the difference is from a trans controller (like the TSP Shift Master) and a lock-up controller (like the TSP tc lock-up controller). My original plan was to run a mystery switch but the guy who built my trans told me not to and I'm afraid if I do it will jepordize my warrenty.

Second question is what cotroller should I get. The truck is a daily driver, toy hauler and stoplight warrior that will be getting more power (probably 450 - 500 whp). I figured the mystery switch would work for better mileage while commuting, better trans braking while towing and give me fast 1/4 mile times. It just amazes me that the t/c lockup controller is more than a trans controller. Therefore, I are confused...

Ok, I think I understand what you're asking. Something like the Shift Master looks like it changes some of the settings for your transmission (shift points, firmness, etc), and seems like it would really only be beneficial for a stock transmission. Normally, aftermarket valve bodies would address issues like that.

The TS lockup controller controls only TC lockup. It is like a mystery switch, except automatic. You can manually set your lock and unlock speeds and can tie in to an exhaust brake.

A mystery switch is much cheaper than either of these (obviously) and I don't see why it would void your warranty or even why your builder would advise against it.

Overall, the lock up controller and the mystery switch accomplish the same thing, just one's automatic (relatively) and one's manual. I would go with either of these, personally. I wouldn't bother with the trans controller though. Just my $.02.

That is exactly what I was looking for!

Does anybody have any recommendations on a lock-up controller?

The only one I know for sure that allows full control is the ATS Commander and don't think it works on a 48RE. Either way you would probably need a fully modified VB to do it.

What are you trying to do? Keep the TC locked towing or racing or want lockup in normal driving?

I do have a fully built trans: t/c, vb, shafts, etc.

As for what I want to do, the short answer is yes. It would be nice to have the t/c locked while driving in 35 or 40 mph zones, it would be nice to have it stay locked going downhill with my 10k lb trailer on, it would be nice to have it locked the few times I race the truck.
