Default Intake Temp Probe Relocation?

Anyone ever move the intake temp sender probe, say to right where it goes into the engine? That way it would read the actual air temp that it is ingesting. Ya know after the turbo and inercooler get done toying with it.

You can mount the probe either pre or post turbo as long as you keep in mind that the acceptable temp redings will be different and account for the difference. If your probe is after the turbo, the air temp will read cooler then it will before the turbo. Since the primary purpose of the temp guage it to keep you from melting your pistons down it is the most common thought that you want to know what temp the inside of your engine is. That's the reason for mounting it pre-turbo.

Mounting it after the turbo is sometimes nice to diagnose turbo problems. Some folks also mount pre and post turbo guages so they can see the differences that the turbo is making.

As far as your real question, reading the air temp at the intake it really isn't going to tell you anything for useful info, unless you just want more guages mounted in your cab. This is assuming I'm reading between the lines of your question right.

Im not wanting to moniter it, just figured the engine would run more consinsant since it uses that temp to adjust the fueling. Uhh, just to make sure, It sounds like you are refering to the EGT temps?! I already have that pre-turbo. Im refering to the sender that is in the intake tube right after the air filther.

i guess you could move it. i don't know exactly what effect it would have on a diesel but it's fairly common practice with gassers. you could also just place a resistor in the signal side of the sensor or short the wiring together depending on how the sensor reads. but my guess is that any programmer, box, etc you buy is going to take this reading into account anyway.

I would say leave it where it is. Inlet temp at the motor will be pretty much higher that ambient under a load. Lightly loaded you may read cooler, but give it some fuel and the temps will be higher. Thats the reason for the intercooler.

If your talking about the MAF sensor do NOT move it. These are strategically placed so that the engine will run properly. Some of the aftermarket intakes moved it to the wrong place and the end result is a bad running engine because it sends false readings to the ECM which will in turn select the wrong fuel map.

well im not sure if it is the MAF sensor or not, but I had it unhooked because I had the tube off to remove the silencer ring, and well I forgot to plug it back in. The truck started right up. Ran almost as good as usuall, but only could get 20psi boost and got a ses light. Well when I saw the code I knew it was that and hooked it back up, cleared the code and all is well. However that got me thinking and wondering why it was there apposed to being closer to the engine.

usually a intake air temp sensor will be 2, sometime 3, wires in a small, somewhat round connector. a MAF sensor will typically be a 4-7 wire thin, rectangular connector. either one will set an SES light.

Must be the MAF then cause its got 4 wires and rectangle connector.
