Default tech mod question

I have an 05 cummins and want to strait pipe it and put a cold air intake on it. I would like to get a programmer for it soon but cant (financially) justify it at the moment. Will my truck run okay without the programmer or will I half to get a programmer before I do anything else?

You should invest in gauges before anything else IMO....then ditch the crappy 3rd Gen intake. Geno's has a muffler delete kit or a local muffler shop and some cash might take care of it as well. Post a thread in the vendor area for a cold air kit....just stay away from K&N unless you want to replace turbos.

X2 .. it will run better, the more flow out the exhaust the faster the spool up on the turbo more air flow will give you more power and probably help your MPG if you can keep your foot out of it

If you straight pipe it go with a 5 inch. I hate the raspy sound of my 4 inch straight pipe

The smarty will pay for itself in a year or less just by the MPG gained!

From a pure performance point, save your money for a programmer and gauges instead of doing an exhaust or CAI. Neither will gain you anything until you go over 500-600 HP.

Gut the TQ tube, drill 4-5 1 inch holes in the bottom of your air box and run a good filter and it will have all the air you need. Even a stock filter shows no difference under 500 HP.

Do a muffler delete and see how it sounds. Delete the CAT if you want more noise but depending on where you are that may impacy licensing. Removing the muffler is the only performance gain until you get to big power.

A Smarty Jr is relatively safe on the lower settings, even the 100 HP tune has good manners. Add a quad boost fooler to make sure your EGT's will stay down and you can get by without gauges for now.

All that can be done for less than an exhaust and CAI, plus, you will have more power, better efficiency, and better driveability.

Can't go wrong with either a FASS or AD.
