Default Used Smarty Question

I have a quick question. I was going to buy a Smarty Jr in the next week. I decided on the Jr. because I don't have gauges nor will I ever race etc. I want to buy it strictly for fuel economy, to tow our travel trailer and because it is $200 cheaper than the Sr. That being said, I just found a used Smarty Sr. for $500 locally. If I were to buy this used one could I keep it on the lower settings and only use it like it was a Jr. because I don't want to trash my stock transmission or put gauges on right now because of money? Any info would be great. Thanks.

As long as your cautious with it yah you can treat it like it was a Jr. I would be easy with it when you tow until you get some gauges put on. The same goes with the tranny, if you take an easy on it, the tranny will last longer. I managed to run my 97 for almost 2 years before having to replace the tranny...

Rkadcock, do you think that even on the lowest setting it will still eventually tear-up my transmission?

its hard to say... Everything mechanical is due to fail at some point. I'm running a smarty on 5 with a stock tranny on my 07 and its holding up and I've been pulling with it. IMO it depends on how hard you push it, as long as your not gunnng it off every light it should be fine.

Like I said above, I ran my 97 for nearly 2 years before my TC went out and I was running just my Aurora 3000, exhaust, CAI, #5 fuel plate and a 4k GSK. I abused mine when racing but when just driving I babied it, and it took a beating once I added the Aurora 5000 to my set up

$500 seems like a LOT!! for a used Smarty Jr. I have seen Sr's go for that used and it does a lot more, you could keep it turned down low. But you are just like everyone else - power is addictive and anything good a little more is better and a lot more is great! Until we fry the tranny. Good luck!

Its 500 for the SR. not jr but yes, go for it and you will be ok on the lower settings. I have mine on 7 with the stock clutch yet

Thanks for the feedback guys. You know my main reason for buying the Smarty is to improve fuel economy. Even the Edge EZ I have now is usually on the 25 hp setting because it seems to give me the best economy compared to the two higher settings.

programmers and boxes dont kill trannys. the heavy foot on the skinny pedal does.

you can toast your tranny completely stock if you drive it like an idiot.
