Default Triple Disc Converters

OK I'm currently running an ATS and it locks up real hard, or at least it did when I ran a Smarty. Anyways, who else has a TDC, don't matter who made it, and how is the lock-up?

The ats is a five clutch converter. they lock up to harsh for most applications and kill your performance and are famous for breaking input shafts due to the harshness of the lock up and excess weight hanging out there on the shaft. a customer of mine runs one and at the track, when it locks he looses all his rpm and boost and has broken one shaft already with pretty much a stock truck with injectors and the ats set up. i was in Texas 3 weeks ago and the only truck there running ats couldnt even hit the 250 ft mark because when that thing locked he lost all of his rpm and power. from what we have learned you will get the best all around performance from a single disc dual clutch setup. locks great but doesn't kill rpm and keeps the truck in the power band were it needs to be. i run the BD set up in mine and it works great and keeps me in the rpm were i need to be for pulling, drag racing, towing and all around street drivability.

i have a Goerend tripple disc, it locks up hard but not too hard really. i don't think that the problem is the amount of clutches a converter has because when all these different brands and makes of converters lock they are in direct drive. the multiple clutches keep it from slipping. i believe it is how loose the converter is when in fluid coupling. my converter is really tight so when it locks there is maybe a 200-300 rpm drop from unlocked to locked. when i had my stock converter it would loose 600-700rpm when it locked up.....

Id have to agree and go with either a Georand Bros, BD or Suncoast Triple or Single Disc Converter.

Benjamin that also does play a big part in it as well. i have nothing against triple disc set ups either if they are matched to what the truck is going to do. it is the five disc set ups from what i have seen that kills these trucks. I see these trucks all the time at the track loosing the rpm and coming out of the power band since a lot of locals run the 5 star ats product. For the right application the 5 star might be a good choice i just haven't seen it work in the applications that most guys are using them for that's all. again based on what we have done to our truck the single clutch dual surface billet BD works great. When we leave the line, whether it is leaving at 25 psi boost launches at the drag strip or hooking to a 30,000 lb sled in the open diesel class or towing a 10,000 lb travel trailer this converter works for all of the needs we use this truck for. At the track under full throttle we have it set up to lock immediately in second gear and when it shifts you cant even here it pull the engine down rpm drops about 2 to 3 hundred and keeps it right in the power band all the way down the track. from the stands it sounds like it never even shifts since the rpm doesn't drop off much. sorry if i got this thread off the subject just trying to help all you guys make good informed decisions with your hard earned money. the last thing any of us want is a part that hurts the performance we are expecting from these trucks once we start modding them.

here is a video of the duramax truck i was talking about. you can here the converter lock and all rpm go away as he tries to get back on it, it is to late. this truck ran in the stock class as well (don't ask me how he did that LOL) since it was for from stock but with the 15,000 lb sled he did good. once he hooked to a big boy sled he couldn't do it. he ran both nights and the same thing happened.

ATS runs a 5 clutch!!! No wonder it didn't slip under a huge load, even when Smarty was turned all the way up. Lucky I didn't break an input shaft also!!

I have a Suncoast , HEres a Tip when John @ Suncoast asks you what your planning on moding on your truck , BE EXACT !! , Know what you want before you call , a TC has be be matched to the mods , Turbo , Injectors to be Percise

Suncoast service after sale is HORRIBLE , Rated Dead last on my list , Wont restall unless you buy another one already stalled diffrently , will restall for $300 and your truck being down for weeks waiting , even if your request comes the same week you bought it .

My 3 Disk is strong and i love it , but i have rode in Goerend Trucks with Equal HP to mine and there trannys were set up much better than mine IMO and they had less $$ invested

Glad I asked about converters cause I thought they were pretty much all the same. Had no idea that the stall had to be matched to the mods.
